by Bianca Graulau -?(SYRACUSE)?Hundreds of residents of Syracuse?s South Side may have to pay between $240 and $1,260 a year for flood insurance.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency notified Syracuse city officials that the flood zone along Onondaga Creek includes 1,099.
The flood maps were revised after officials were trying to fight the imposition that would force the insurance cost on some of Syracuse?s poorest residents. But only 106 properties were left out of the flood zone.
According to the Census, more than 40% of the residents in the flood maps area live in poverty. FEMA said the maps are still preliminary and it will be accepting comments from those affected during the next 30 days.
After its final decision, FEMA will give the communities six months to incorporate the maps. They are expected to take effect later this year.
Community organizers have expressed themselves against the new maps because of the economic burden it would put on residents.
FEMA instituted discounted rates for the homeowners who are new to a flood area. The eligibility requirements are to never have submitted a flood insurance claim or received FEMA flood assistance.
