Retail Round-Up: Aeropostale, Guess, rue21 All Report Earnings ...

A trio of clothing retailers released their quarterly earnings results after the closing bell on Wednesday. Guess? (NYSE: GES) rose around 4.5 percent in the after hours trading session after its report, while Aeropostale (NYSE: ARO) fell almost eight percent. Small-cap name rue21 (NASDAQ: RUE) was down only slightly after its results.

Guess shares rose sharply during normal trading hours ahead of the company's third-quarter results and continued to climb in the wake of the report in late trading. All told, the stock added almost 10 percent on the day.

The company has been struggling in recent years as operating margins have come under pressure, but sales have continued to rise on an annual basis. Net income, however, fell in fiscal 2012 versus the year ago period.

Over the last decade, GES has soared over 1,900 percent but the stock is down 41 percent over the last 5 years as investors have been concerned about less robust growth rates at the retailer. As of Wednesday's close the stock had lost a little more than 15 percent in 2012.

For the fiscal third-quarter, the company reported net earnings of $36.65 million or $0.43 per share, compared to $66.30 million or $0.71 per share, in the year ago period. This missed Wall Street analysts' consensus earnings per share estimates of $0.44 by a penny.

Sales in the period were down 2.2 percent to $628.83 million from $642.80 million in last year's third-quarter. The results topped Wall Street consensus revenue estimates of $624.54 million.

Looking ahead to the fourth-quarter, Guess said that it expects earnings per share of $0.85 to $0.95 on revenue of $780 million to $8000 million. This compares to current consensus estimates of $0.95 per share in earnings and revenue of $789.17 million for the fiscal fourth-quarter.

For fiscal 2013, the company lowered its outlook. Earnings are now expected to be between $2.05 and $2.15 per share on revenue of $2.62 billion to $2.64 billion. This compares to the company's previous guidance of $2.15 to $2.30 per share on revenue of $2.62 billion to $2.65 billion.

The updated revenue guidance implies that Guess will report its first annual sales decrease in the last five years. The guidance is also below analysts' consensus estimates of $2.16 per share on revenue of $2.63 billion for fiscal 2013.

The company's board of directors approved a special dividend of $1.20 per share which will be paid along with the quarterly dividend of $0.20. The combined dividends will be payable on December 28, 2012 to shareholders of record at the close of business on December 12, 2012.

Guess competitor Aeropostale also released its fiscal third-quarter earnings results after the closing bell on Wednesday. The company reported a slight rise in net income to $24.9 million from $24.1 million in the year ago quarter. On a per share basis, Aeropostale earned $0.31 versus $0.30 last year. This beat Wall Street earnings per share estimates of $0.29 by two pennies.

Net sales in the quarter were up 2 percent to $605.9 million from $596.5 million in last year's fiscal third-quarter. This also exceeded Wall Street consensus estimates of $600.44 million.

While Aeropostale's third-quarter numbers beat Wall Street expectations, the stock was under pressure in the after hours due to poor guidance. The company said that it sees earnings per share in a range of $0.36 to $0.41 for the fiscal fourth-quarter. This is well below current consensus earnings expectations of $0.54 for the upcoming quarter.

Shares of smaller retail competitor rue21 fell just 0.21 percent in after hours trading compared to a jump for Guess and a near eight percent decline for Aeropostale. rue21 reported earnings results for the third-quarter which were ahead of Wall Street consensus, but sales missed expectations. The company also lifted its full-year fiscal 2012 earnings outlook.

For the period, rue21 reported adjusted net income of $10.0 million or $0.41 per share. This was two pennies better than analysts' consensus earnings per share estimates of $0.39.

Total sales in the quarter were up 15.6 percent to $225.16 million from $194.76 million in last year's third-quarter. This came up short of analysts' consensus revenue estimates of $228.85 million.

Looking ahead, rue21 said that it sees fourth-quarter earnings between $0.60 and $0.63 per share. Currently, Wall Street analysts are modeling fourth quarter earnings per share of $0.63 for the company.

For fiscal 2012, the company raised its adjusted earnings per share outlook to a range of $1.83 to $1.86 from its previous guidance range of $1.80 to $1.85 per share. This compares to current consensus of $1.85 per share for fiscal 2012.

What You Need to Know about Estate Planning Salisbury ...

A number of people in Salisbury have thought about managing their properties in order to ensure the security of their families? future. If you are one of these people, then estate planning Salisbury is certainly what you require to make certain that things go according to your will. The unfortunate truth is that a lot of people neglect this thought, for a number of reasons. Some of them do not think that it is totally compulsory while others are not comfortable talking about death. Nevertheless, it is essential that you set things with all that you own.

With estate planning Salisbury, you can rest assured that your assets will go to the right people. It involves the precise planning of the management of your property after you die. Making such plans will guarantee that your loved ones will not struggle after you pass on. The incidence of misunderstandings and fights is greatly reduced or even eliminated when you plan your estate properly. Matters will be handled according to your plan and your loved ones will benefit greatly as they will receive what is rightfully meant for them.

The first step to ensuring proper estate planning is hiring a qualified and trustworthy attorney and an accountant. The professional estate planners specialize in financial planning and trust and estate. They are knowledgeable in this field and know what steps to take. They are best placed to provide you with the right advice on the course of path to follow. A majority of people go for attorneys that have been working for them for years; an attorney that they know they can trust.

It is imperative that you write your last will and testament in order that you may ensure that your property and assets will be inherited by the right people. A professional attorney that has experience when it comes to estate planning will assist you in crafting a will that identifies your trustees and beneficiaries. Your will should also identify the attorney that will be in charge of the will and inform all the concerned parties about it in the event of your demise.

Your last will and testament also designates guardians for your children, if you have any. The demise of one parent can be very hard on a child especially if the other parent is also not around. Proper estate planning will prevent your children from going through the courts and being handled by the social service offices. Select a close relative or the godparents of your child to be their guardian in the event of your passing on. Make sure that you have informed these people of the role you have designated them and that they have agreed to taking up that responsibility.

?

Proper estate planning in Salisbury ensures that your property goes to the people that you want it go to in the event of your demise. For further information, visit www.amacdonaldlaw.com.

Infinity in the real world: Does space go on forever?

MacGregor Campbell, consultant

It's an existential question most of us have probably pondered at some point: is space infinite? It's tricky to answer because there's not just one kind of infinity to consider. Even if the universe goes on forever, it may not be infinitely large. It could be bounded like the surface of the Earth, allowing you to travel indefinitely without ever finding an edge.

In this animation, we try to determine the size of space, and whether it could be never-ending. Although infinity is easy to imagine mathematically, in the real world it's harder to pin down. Perhaps the universe is just really big but has a finite size. And if it has an upwards limit, what about the opposite: can it contain things that are infinitely small? Is there a smallest possible length?

If you enjoyed this video, check out our previous animations that tackle, for example, the true nature of reality, or why there's no such thing as nothing.

Chimp comedy brings the blues

Costumed chimps used to make me grin ear to ear when I saw them on TV. Now I realize there?s little that separates that delight from coveting a Chinese potion made from rhino tusks. It is sad to lose this pleasure, but somehow I?ll manage.

After a visit to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Sierra Leone, I knew my days of snickering at chimps imitating actors were over. As it turns out, many other non-Africans have delighted in chimps before me. Since 1950, the small West African country exported more than 2,000 live chimps to the US, Japan, and Europe for the entertainment industry and for biomedical research. A law restricting such exports was passed in the eighties, but chimps continued to be owned within Sierra Leone, typically by tourists and expatriates including Peace Corps volunteers [reference 1]. A young chimp sells for US$61 on average, which is a pretty price in a country where most people survive on less than $1 per day.

Young chimps are super cute! But as they age, the jungle within appears. They flip tables, tear down drapes, and occasionally attack. A grown chimp is far stronger than a grown man, and it bears fiercer teeth. (Remember when Travis the chimp, a former star in Coca Cola and Old Navy commercials, mauled Charla Nash in California?) People tend to ditch their pet chimps once they?ve grown, but these human-raised creatures can no longer fend for themselves in the wild, and zoos often turn them away because they do not know how to integrate within chimp society.

Chimps at Tacugama from Amy Maxmen on Vimeo.

Thus, in 1995, an accountant in Sierra Leone, Bala Amarasekaran, established Tacugama Chimp Sanctuary to rehabilitate orphaned chimps, and to advocate against the chimpanzee pet trade. Some of the sanctuary?s chimps are donated by expatriates who no longer want their pets. Others are discovered within cages in abandoned houses, or chained by the road for sale. More recently, authorities confiscate illegally owned chimps because of a 2007 law prohibiting the capture, killing, or possession of chimps in Sierra Leone, and bring them to Tacugama.

A skinny Sierra Leonean man with a lazy eye and a warm demeanor named Moses Kappia led my tour of Tacugama Sanctuary. As we watched chimps howl and bounce through various rehabilitation enclosures, we talked about the history of the sanctuary.

When Kappia arrived at Tacugama 16 years ago, he watched it blossom with start-up donations from the European Union. Soon after, the sanctuary struggled to survive as civil war ripped through Sierra Leone. In 1997, rebels broke into the sanctuary and threatened to kill the chimpanzees for food, but Kappia and the few remaining staff convinced them to spare the animals. Instead, the rebels stole their belongings, their food, and the food and medicine intended for the chimps. The rebels returned again during that brutal, 11-year ?blood diamond? war, and again Kappia defended the chimps.

As the war wound down in 2002, Tacugama joined together with other African primate sanctuaries in the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance. They still struggle for funds, but manage to care for nearly 100 orphaned chimps that now frolic in their fenced-in slice of jungle.

Ali, my taxi driver, accompanied me on the tour. Inspired by Kappia, he vowed to report any chimps he discovered being sold or kept. And on the ride home, Ali said that he?d let any ?white people? in his taxi know that he could take them to see (not buy) the chimps ? just a 20 minute drive from the capital city of Freetown.

Back in the US, I?ve taken note of the Captive Primate Safety Act that has languished in Congress since 2007. It seeks to protect monkeys, chimps and other primates from the exotic pet trade in the US. The Humane Society suggests that people urge their legislators to support the act when it is reintroduced next year.

Kappia managed to convince rebels notorious for rape, amputations, and other crimes against humanity to leave the chimps alone. So when he asked me why our civil society continues to allow chimp pets and promotes chimps as entertainment despite the harm that then befalls our closest cousins, I felt lame answering, because we think it?s funny.

PFT: Schaub says Suh isn't 'Houston Texan-worthy'

St Louis Rams v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

It sounds like rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley will get another shot? to start for the Cardinals, after his four-interception debut.

But as with all things Cardinals quarterbacks this year, that comes with an asterisk.

Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that Lindley would start again if Kevin Kolb wasn?t healthy, making it reasonable to wonder if John Skelton will ever see the light of day again.

Two of Lindley?s picks were returned for touchdowns in the Cards loss to the Rams, their seventh straight after a 4-0 start.

?Yes. We stay with Ryan,? Whisenhunt said of the non-Kolb condition, via Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. Listen, let?s start this thing off by saying you can?t have those interceptions. But in the first half, I thought he did a really nice job. He moved in the pocket, was decisive, managed it, made some good throws. We had three scoring drives in the first half, 17 points and over 200 yards of offense, possession time, was good on third down. I felt that we did a lot of good things, even with the pick-six.

?And the first pick-six, that was a mistake in his read. That can happen. The one in the second half, you have to learn from those. He made a bad decision. That?s what you have to see, can he learn from that? There was nobody more upset about than him, especially after the game. He was torn up because he knows he can?t do that.?

In Arizona he can, because they?re running out of options.

Asked if Kolb might be ready to return from a rib injury this week, Whisenhunt said he wasn?t sure yet.

?I don?t know where Kevin is health-wise,? Whisenhunt said. ?He?s making progress but as far as being ready for a game, that?s something we can?t determine until we see where he is Wednesday.?

Short of Kurt Warner coming back, it?s hard to imagine how any shuffling of the current deck chairs is going to matter that much.

12 Most Relaxing Things to Do when there's no Internet

I?ve just returned from my annual vacation to the family cottage. When I tell people there is no cell phone coverage, no internet connection, no TV and not even very good radio coverage, most people think I?ve found the back door to heaven. For a social media consultant, however, going without internet for a week could be just the opposite.

I usually don?t have much trouble backing off my internet consumption for the week we?re away, but I admit I do have to travel up to the wifi caf? every couple of days to check on my client accounts and respond to emails. So, what does a web-addict do with all this newfound free time?

1. Take a nap

Chances are you?re sleep deprived. Depending on the study you read, adults need anywhere from six to 10 hours of sleep per night. I?m leaning more towards six, so I always get a few extra zzzzz?s on vacation.

2. Sit on the deck and watch the waves

Or the clouds, flowers, birds, animals? whatever you?ve got. Enjoy nature for a while.

3. Read a book

Whether you like a good old fashioned hard cover novel, the Kindle, or an audio book, having no internet connection is the perfect time to catch up on something you?ve been meaning to read. I quite enjoyed listening to an audio book while I sat and watched the waves from my deck. Then I picked up the hard cover I had brought with me. Two mindless reads in one week.

4. Write a blog post

Pretty clear that I have spent some of my vacation doing work. I think that?s the downfall of the entrepreneur? can you ever really?leave work? I always knock off a couple of blog posts while I?m away. Sometimes they are book reviews (if my books are business related), sometimes they?re about what to do when there?s no internet. Either way, I feel a bit more relaxed when I know there are a couple of posts waiting to be published when I get back. Takes a bit of the pressure off when I?m trying to get caught up.

5. Play a game

Lucky for me there are a bunch of people here at the cottage. Any time you want to play a game, there?s someone to play with. There?s nothing as relaxing as taking out your stress on the Scrabble board, or landing in a fit of the giggles with your family.

6. Go to the beach

Ok, ok? so the land-locked readers might have a harder time with this one. Our cottage happens to be in the Bay of Fundy with the highest tides in the world. Twice a day we have a huge beach on which to walk, fly kites or build sand castles.

7. Try a new coffee shop

This one is easy to do if you?re away from home. Go. Sit. Try a new blend and a decadent dessert while you?re there.

8. Organize your computer files

Yes, I?m serious! If you?ve been putting off getting your computer organized, take the time to do it now. If you got this far down on the list, really, what else do you have to do? And getting organized will definitely help you feel less stressed.

9. Sudoku

If Word Find and crossword isn?t your thing, check out the Sudoku puzzles in your local paper (or buy a book of them). These logic puzzles are a great way to keep your synapses firing.

10. Go for a walk

When was the last time you went for a walk? Not a power walk. Not a run. Just a walk to enjoy your natural surroundings? Go out and focus on nature for awhile. You might be amazed at what you notice. I?m sitting in the middle of a haven for Swallowtail and Monarch butterflies ? that?s fun!

11. Watch a movie

My kids use this one more than I do. Download, borrow, beg or steal, but take a couple of movies with you on your vacation. When everyone goes to bed early here I just pop in my ear buds and watch a movie.

12. Get back at that hobby

It?s been months since I touched my favorite hobby. If I were at home without internet I might actually be inspired to try making a card to send to someone. Alas, I?m at the family cottage and my dining room full of craft supplies is six hours away.

Hmmm. I don?t know about you, but now I don?t feel quite so bored without my internet connection. I guess I?ve been quite busy afterall this week, since I?ve done 11 out of the 12 things I?ve listed.

Oh, yes, and there is a 13th item I could list, but I?m at a shared, FAMILY cottage. And without internet I couldn?t ask if this was a FAMILY friendly blog, so I wasn?t sure if I should mention sex. Oops.

Gaza cease-fire raises hopes for reconstruction

(AP Photo/Bernat Armangue)

(AP) ? Mohammed Falah Azzam has been through this before.

His mother's home was bombed in the 2008-09 Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which left hundreds dead and thousands of homes destroyed. In renewed fighting last week, an entire block of buildings housing his extended family was badly damaged in an airstrike that Israel said was aimed at a militant.

While none of his relatives was hurt, the 61-year-old retired schoolteacher once again has to worry about providing shelter for his family. Some relatives are sleeping in an empty shop, squeezed in with other family members. Others are spending their nights in rooms covered in plastic wrap to shield them from the winter rain because all the windows were blown out.

"This is going to cost thousands," Azzam said. "The longer I wait, the more damage will happen," he added, pointing to a heavily damaged building sitting atop tilting concrete columns.

Azzam finds himself caught again in a pile of paperwork to seek assistance, trying to secure hard-to-get construction materials. This time, he hopes the process will be smoother, thanks to both Israel's pledges to ease its longstanding border blockade and the newfound political clout of Gaza's Hamas rulers in the region.

Israel promised to ease the blockade as part of a cease-fire last week that ended eight days of intense fighting. But difficult negotiations lie ahead, and there is no firm timeline for lifting the restrictions.

Israel launched its offensive Nov. 14 in response to months of rocket fire out of Gaza. It carried out some 1,500 airstrikes during the fighting, while Palestinian militants lobbed a similar number of rockets into Israel.

The damage to buildings in Gaza appears less extensive than it was four years ago. The United Nations estimates 10,000 homes were destroyed or damaged, while Hamas has put the number at about 8,000, including 500 that were destroyed or heavily damaged. In comparison, U.N. relief agencies said as many as 40,000 homes were affected in the earlier round of fighting.

Israel says its airstrikes are aimed at militants, and it blames Hamas for the damage, accusing the group of using residential areas for cover.

Reconstruction since the 2008-9 fighting has been slow, in large part because of Israel's blockade. Israel imposed the restrictions in 2007, after Hamas, a militant group sworn to its destruction, wrested power over the coastal strip from the government of Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Under international pressure, Israel loosened the blockade in 2010 but maintained tight restrictions on imports of glass, cement, metal and other construction materials, saying they could be diverted for military use. Only U.N agencies and international organizations in the Palestinian territory are allowed to import such material from Israel for their own projects.

To make up the shortage, a bustling smuggling industry through underground tunnels along the Egyptian border has sprung up. While prices for key construction goods have come down, they still remain expensive for the majority of the population in Gaza, where the unemployment rate is over 30 percent and 80 percent of the people rely on U.N. handouts.

"The blockade in terms of housing impacts us primarily ? the U.N. ?and the people who are most vulnerable who don't have access to jobs or economic opportunity," said Scott Anderson, deputy director of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency. "People who have money, it is easily available."

In the short term, there is no relief in sight. During the recent offensive, Israel heavily targeted the tunnels, which are also used to bring weapons into Gaza. Residents along the border say that smugglers and tunnel owners are still inspecting the damage but that many of the tunnels still operate, though at reduced capacity.

An Egyptian security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, estimated that half the tunnels are not functioning.

With a sullied face and wearing only his undergarments, Azzam gave up his search for valuables in the rubble of his destroyed home on a recent day. He sat down to take a break and do some math.

His mother's house was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in 2009. Since then, he has barely managed to rebuild one of its two floors. A $25,000 grant he received from an Arab fund did not cover the costs, and materials for the project have been hard to come by.

The Hamas government has given him $1,000 to find a place to live for now, and each member of the extended family received a similar amount. With housing in tight supply and rents skyrocketing, Azzam said the money will not last long.

"As we look there are no places to begin with," he said. "If we find a place, rent will be around $300 or $400. Before it was $200."

Yasser al-Shanti, deputy of the ministry of public works and housing in the Hamas government, said construction materials will start flowing into Gaza again once the tunnels are up and running again.

But Hamas' real hope is that Israel and Egypt will lift border restrictions to allow large quantities of goods into the territory through proper border crossings. Hamas has high hopes for Egypt's new Islamist government, which is far more sympathetic to the Islamic group than the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak.

The Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt is currently limited to foot traffic. Hamas, an offshoot of Egypt's ruling Muslim Brotherhood, wants Egypt to turn the crossing into a bustling cargo terminal.

"We expect that international and Arab institutions are ready to help. We don't expect to have a problem," al-Shanti said.

Hamas has put the damage to Gaza's civilian infrastructure at roughly $750 million, a sum that will probably have to be raised through special U.N. emergency appeals and donations from wealthy Arab countries.

The future of the crossing will be a central issue in indirect, Egyptian-brokered negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Under the cease-fire, Israel made a vague commitment to ease its closing of Gaza. But the details must be negotiated.

With Hamas rejecting Israel's key demand ? that arms smuggling into Gaza be halted ? it remains far from certain whether Hamas will get what it wants. Egypt also has not been clear how far it is willing to open its border, fearing that this will allow Israel to "dump" Gaza on Egypt and undermine hopes for reconciliation between Hamas and Abbas' rival government in the West Bank.

Ayman el-Kholi, whose two-story home was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike aimed at militants, said Hamas government representatives and fighters, including Hamas strongman Mahmoud Zahar, visited him and promised compensation.

"They promised that after things calm down, they will begin to reconstruct all homes destroyed and not just ours," he said.

In the meantime, the 41-year-old banker has sent his six children to sleep at various relatives' homes, and he is staying with a friend. The rubble from the destroyed building was still in a heap on Sunday as he waited for the only government tractor to come remove it.

The entire block was damaged by airstrike. Shops were buried and a nearby workshop for electrical appliances was severely damaged.

"We don't save in banks. All my money was in the house. All of it is now under the rubble, around $10,000 plus my wife's gold," el-Kholi said. "We are waiting for an opening of the crossing. We are waiting for donor countries, from Arab countries, to help us rebuild the house again."
