Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already Have

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already HaveDespite its shortcomings, the Nintendo Wii U brought about a fun new way to play games that combines a handheld personal screen with your television set. But chances are you've already got a smartphone and don't necessarily want to shell out another $300 or more for a console. The good news? You can get the Wii U experience on the smartphone you already have with the help of a few apps.

Your smartphone wasn't designed to operate like the Wii U, but that doesn't mean it can't. The folks over at Apartment Therapy Tech figured out a few ways to emulate the experience. We have a few more. Read on for information about your specific device.

iPhone (and Other iDevices)

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already HaveA number of recent iDevices (such as the iPhone 4S and 5, iPad 3, 4, and mini, and the iPod touch 5G) support AirPlay mirroring, which allows you to send your mobile's screen over to a television or computer. This means you can use your device like a controller but see the game on the big screen as well. As Apartment Therapy Tech points out, this is very easy to accomplish if you already have an Apple TV as it acts like a receiver. All you have to do is send your device's signal to it using these steps:

  1. Double-press your device's home button to bring up the multitasking bar.
  2. Swipe from left to right (twice on an iPhone or iPod touch) to gain access to the volume controls.
  3. Tap the AirPlay icon.
  4. Choose an AirPlay receiver, such as the AppleTV.
  5. Proceed to play a game!

Of course, not all games work perfectly with AirPlay Mirroring, but you can find out which ones are supported here.

What do you do if you don't have an Apple TV? You can still mirror your device on your Mac or Windows PC with a handy app called AirServer. It acts as a receiver for AirPlay video on your computer, just like the Apple TV. As far as your iDevice knows, it is. You connect to it using the same steps outlined above.

Also, as warp100 pointed out, you can do this over HDMI if you don't mind being tethered. All you need is an Apple Digital AV connector either for the 30-pin dock connector or new lightning port.

Android

Get the Wii U Experience with the Smartphone You Already HaveAndroid doesn't have a feature exactly like AirPlay Mirroring, but that doesn't mean you can't use your phone or tablet for a Wii U-like gaming experience. For starters, Apartment Therapy Tech suggests using WanderPlayer, as it will turn your mobile into a controller for PC-based games. Alternatively, if you want true mirroring, you can pick up an nScreen which connects your TV and mirrors your Android's screen (using the nScreen Mirroring app, that is). Of course, many Android devices simply support HDMI output. If you don't mind wiring it to your television set, you can play on your Android and your TV no problem. For more on all the great things you can do over HDMI with your Android, check out our guide.

Ex-Sen. Chuck Hagel reportedly on short list for Defense Secy.

Facebook (FB) announced on Tuesday that it will begin opening Facebook Messenger to consumers who do not have a Facebook account, starting in countries like India and South Africa, and later rolling out the service in the United States and Europe.?This is a belated acknowledgement of a staggering strategic mistake Facebook made two years ago. That is when the messaging app competition was still wide open and giants like Facebook or Google (GOOG) could have entered the competition. WhatsApp, the leading messaging app firm, had just 1 million users as late as December 2009. By the end of 2010, that number had grown to 10 million. Right now, it likely tops 200 million, though there is no current official number

IMF halts Congo loan over mining contract concerns

KINSHASA (Reuters) - The IMF has halted $240 million in planned loans to Democratic Republic of Congo for failing to publish mining contracts as requested, the IMF's representative in Congo said on Monday.

President Joseph Kabila, grappling with a costly war in the eastern borderlands, had sought to woo investors with promises to tackle rampant corruption.

Congolese authorities last week published a note on the 2011 sale of its stake in a mine run by ENRC but the IMF, which has demanded greater transparency in the copper and cobalt-mining sector in return for cash, said it was not enough.

"IMF staff considers that the information contained in the published note falls short of the requirements for extending the agreement," Oscar Melhado told Reuters in an email.

Congo had hoped the note would convince the IMF to extend the loan programme, which will expire on December 10 with three instalments of the overall $560 million loan retained.

The Fund suspended payments last year over Kinshasa's sale of its 25 percent stake in the Comide project to a British Virgin Islands company called Straker International.

"A new program is possible if understandings can be reached on the way going forward, including further actions to strengthen governance and transparency in the extractive industries," Melhado added.

Congo's mining sector has expanded since the official end to the last war in 2003 and economic growth hit 7 percent last year.

However, Kabila's re-election last year was challenged by rivals and widely criticised by observers, and his army has failed to put down a rebellion in the eastern regions near the border with Rwanda and Uganda.

The conflict in North Kivu is far from the copper and cobalt-producing Katanga province but fighting this year has diverted resources and political attention from promised reforms.

AP Source: South Florida fires Skip Holtz

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Skip Holtz has been fired as South Florida's football coach following the worst season in the program's 16-year history, a person familiar with the decision said Sunday.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the firing would not be announced until a late afternoon news conference.

The son of former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz went 16-21 at the Big East school, concluding a three-year run by losing nine of 10 to finish a school-worst 3-9, 1-6 in the conference, following a 2-0 start.

The move comes a year after Holtz was given a contract extension through 2017 despite going 5-7 in his second season. He will receive a $2.5 million buyout paid over five years.

Holtz inherited a program that Jim Leavitt built from scratch, signing a $9.1 million, five-year contract in January 2010 after Leavitt was fired for mistreating a player who had accused the former coach of grabbing him by the throat and slapping him in the face during halftime of a game.

The 48-year-old Holtz came to USF from East Carolina, where he had guided the Pirates to a pair of Conference USA championships. He welcomed the challenge of stepping into the Big East and trying to transform the Bulls, ranked as high as No. 2 in the country in 2007, into an elite program.

But it did not happen.

The Bulls went 8-5 and appeared in a bowl game for the sixth consecutive season three years ago, but a pattern of underachieving that actually began under Leavitt returned in 2011, when USF won four straight to climb into the Top 25 only to drop seven of eight down the stretch and tumble to the bottom of the conference.

USF has lost 14 of its past 16 against Big East opponents and were 5-16 overall in league play under Holtz, who stated boldly after taking the job: "We can win conference championships here. We can win national championships here."

The dismissal came the day after the Bulls concluded with a 27-3 loss to Pittsburgh. Holtz said afterward that he hoped to retain his job, reiterating that the program had made strides under his direction, including academically, that weren't necessarily reflected in the win-loss record.

Injuries hurt this year's team, particularly on offense, where the Bulls lost quarterback B.J. Daniels, No. 3 on the Big East's career total yardage list, and red-shirt freshman Matt Floyd started the last two games. By the end of Saturday's loss, tight end/emergency backup QB Evan Landi was playing.

Pitt limited the Bulls to a USF record-low 117 yards, including 8 rushing. The offense scored one touchdown in the final 15 quarters of the season and USF was outscored 94-22 in the final three games of the season.

"Just a very frustrating night, a very frustrating year," Holtz, who's 88-70 overall in 13 seasons at Connecticut, East Carolina and USF, said after the game.

"There's been a lot of hard work that has gone into this. ... But I also understand that we've put some people in a very tough position with where we are, and I understand the nature of this business is to win games," Holtz added. "People don't really care if you're on a fourth quarterback, your fifth defensive end or how many freshmen you're playing. They want to win."

Putin visits Turkey amid differences over Syria

ISTANBUL (AP) ? The blossoming trade relationship will be the focus of a one-day trip to Turkey by Russian President Vladimir Putin, though differences between the two countries over the conflict in Syria will likely be aired.

Putin's visit to Istanbul on Monday is his first trip in two months. The unusual break in his travel schedule fed speculation that the 60-year-old Russian leader is suffering from serious back trouble or another illness. His spokesman has attributed Putin's discomfort to a pulled muscle, and the president has appeared more mobile in recent days.

During the talks, Turkey is likely to argue for tougher action against Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Kremlin has shown no inclination of relinquishing its support for its last Middle East ally, whom it has shielded from international sanctions and continued to provide with weapons during an escalating civil war.

Russia and China have used their veto power at the U.N. Security Council to block any U.N. sanctions on Assad's regime over its crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011. Advocates say at least 40,000 Syrians have been killed in the fighting since then.

Moscow has also insisted that it would honor weapons contracts signed earlier with Syria for the delivery of anti-ship and air-defense missiles. Despite Western demands to halt the trade, the Kremlin has argued that the sales don't violate any international agreements.

Russia and Turkey were recently at loggerheads over Syria.

In October, Russia reacted angrily to Turkey's decision to force a Syria-bound passenger plane flying from Moscow to land in Turkey because Turkish officials said there was military equipment on board. Moscow said the plane was legally carrying radar parts for Syria.

Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign affairs adviser, has said the incident may come up during Putin's talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, he signaled that Russia was not going to press its argument, saying the cargo, which has remained in Turkish hands, belongs to Syria.

And while Russia has voiced concern about the planned deployment of NATO's Patriot air-defense missiles on Turkey's border with Syria, it has carefully balanced its statements on the subject and avoided any sharp criticism of Turkey itself.

Ushakov said a candid exchange of views with Turkey will help "if not narrow the gap, at least understand each other's moves better."

Despite their apparent disagreements over Syria, Russia and Turkey have robust economic ties, which will be the main focus of Monday's talks. Turkey is a top consumer of Russian natural gas, while Russia is a major market for Turkish construction companies. Ushakov said trade between the two countries, which totaled $32 billion last year, is expected to grow to $100 billion in the coming years.

Among other projects, Russia is building Turkey's first nuclear power plant. Turkey is also a top travel destination for Russians, with more than 3.5 million Russian tourists visiting last year.

Putin had been expected to visit Turkey in October, but he postponed that and several other foreign trips, and instead spent most of the past two months at his suburban residence.

Various explanations have been put forward for Putin's discomfort, which first appeared at a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in Vladivostok in early September.

The business daily Vedomosti claimed Putin had injured his back shortly before the summit in a widely publicized flight in a motorized hang glider.

However, Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, has portrayed Putin as a robust athlete who pulled a muscle during judo training, while his chief of staff, Sergei Ivanov, said Putin had sustained a "light sports injury."

Putin's only air travel since the Vladivostok summit was a trip in early October to Ulyanovsk, a city 725 kilometers (450 miles) from Moscow.

Putin plans to visit Turkmenistan on Wednesday and make other foreign trips before the end of the year.
